An astonishing rendering of Stravinsky’s musical-choreographic magnum opus, presented in all its earthbound pagan energy, Michael Keegan-Dolan’s TheRite of Spring / Petrushka masterfully conveys the power and mystery of a score that so notoriously shocked a generation.
The evening segues from the animalism of The Rite of Spring into an ethereal reimagining of Petrushka, in which only echoes of Stravinsky’s parable remain. Together the pieces form two halves of a whole – The Rite of Spring’s primitive earthiness counterpointed against Petrushka’s gossamer imagery – with both scores performed by sisters Lidija and Sanja Bizjak, in fourhanded piano arrangements that honour the searing modernity of Stravinsky’s music.
